Lowell glacier Kluane national park Yukon

Lowell 2 – 2024

All glaciers end somewhere, and this is where the Lowell ends. I always love flying over this spot because you can see changes in the toe of this glacier each time. The Lowell Glacier has surged forward several times and gradually recedes afterwards, with the most recent surge being 2009-2010. When this happens, this spot can look very very different. I’ve never witnessed the glacier during/right after a surge, but even in the 5 years since I was there last, you could certainly see the characteristics of the glacier toe change.
