Solar Eclipse Transition

Sky Dance – 2024

You may not have known this, but there was an eclipse Ontario not long ago! I know, it was easy to miss with all the clouds and the lack of posts or news about it.

Jokes aside, this was my first eclipse and it was a wild experience. From the day I learned that an eclipse was going to happen here in April, I was absolutely positive it would be fully cloud covered (as is tradition). I’d check the weather report here and there to try to convince myself that there was a chance, but it wasn’t until a day or two out that I started to believe it.

On the morning of the eclipse I poured over weather models looking for any kind of consensus. The two higher-resolution models I was familiar with both suggested that Port Stanley likely had the best chance – and the decision was made. Thankfully the decision paid off as we arrived to fully blue skies in all directions!

The eclipse itself was so alien – I had heard descriptions of what happens, but experiencing it was something else. Slowly the temperature dropped, the light got dimmer, and as we approached totality the world felt like it was rapidly transitioning to something that felt almost supernatural. I now completely understand why people say you need to experience it to get it. With that said, I was pretty glued to my camera to collect as many frames as possible, in as high-quality as possible, with the kit I had available in order to produce these images. The above scene came together from around 53 photos. I wanted to showcase as many of the different phases or components of the eclipse as possible, and this is my attempt at that!

Hope you enjoy!
